Three barbers working at three chairs down a long pale room, seen from the back of the shop

Station 01 — the room

Hard light, white tile, nothing to look at but the work

Four chairs in a line, a mirror each, and a counter you can see the whole length of. We keep the lamps cold and high so that a fade shows its own mistakes. If a line is wrong you will see it from the door, which is the point.

What most people sit down for

Thinning shears and a comb working across the back of a dark head of hair£19

Skin fade

Clipper out to the skin at the bottom, blended by hand up to whatever you keep on top. Thirty-five minutes. Ask for Emeka.

35 min · chair 02 · shot Tuesday 14.10

A red comb lifting grey hair while a straight blade follows it across the top of a head£22

Scissor cut, long on top

All scissor, no clipper anywhere on the head. Forty minutes because it cannot be rushed, and it grows out straight for six weeks.

40 min · chair 03 · shot Thursday 16.25

A badger brush laying white lather along a jaw, photographed in black and white£32

Straight-razor shave

Two hot towels, soap whipped in a bowl, two passes and a cold one. Forty-five minutes flat on your back. Not for a nine o'clock meeting.

Chair four, 07.50, the first shave of a Saturday

Straight-razor shave£32

On the clock45 min

Booked onlyNot after 17.00

01

Towel, four minutes

Out of the cabinet at about 70 °C, wrung and wrapped. It is hotter than you expect for ten seconds and then it is the best part of your week.

02

Oil, then soap off a brush

Pre-shave oil worked in against the grain, then soap whipped in a scuttle until it holds a peak. Canned foam does none of this and we do not keep any.

03

First pass, with the grain

Open blade, held at thirty degrees, short strokes, skin pulled tight with the other hand. This pass takes the length off and nothing else.

04

Second pass, across it

Re-lather and go across the grain, not against it. Against the grain is how people end up with ingrown hairs on their neck, so we only do it if you ask twice.

05

Cold towel and alum

Cold towel to shut everything down, alum block over the jaw, balm if your skin takes it. You walk out at forty-five minutes, not fifty.

A barber with a top-knot and a tattooed forearm working a comb and clipper up the side of a seated man’s head03

Marta Sowińska

All-scissor work and anything curly. Trained in Poznań, eight years on the floor. Fastest clean crop in the shop: nine minutes.

A gloved barber running a clipper up the side of a seated client’s head under a single hanging lamp04

Reuben Ffoulkes

Finished his apprenticeship here in 2024 and took the razor chair. Shaves, beard work, and most of the walk-ins after four.
